I’ve spoken about my love for tea on the blog before when I interviewed my lovely friend Marcy, from Parched Tea Bar (You can read again here). 

I find the process of tea making extremely relaxing and it forms a large part of my mindful night time routine which I swear by to get a good nights sleep. So it’s no wonder that when Heath & Heather got in touch for me to try their new range of Organic Super Teas I jumped at the chance.

I already have a huge collection of tea but generally stick to what I know (I’m a creature of habit!) so it was lovely to get to try some new flavours out for a change. There are 5 teas altogether including their Digestive Superseeds, Supportive Root Remedy, Detoxing Slim Tea, Energising Morning and Relaxing Night Time.

Now I’m a huge fan of packaging and often buy products based on the look and feel of the box rather than the contents inside and these teas didn’t disappoint. They are beautifully designed, easy on the eye and each individually wrapped – perfect for popping in your desk drawer or taking in your handbag when travelling.

So what did I think of the flavours?

Energising Morning time

The Morning Time tea is an infusion of apple & rosehip with guarana & ginseng. The box says that Guarana seeds are believed to contain twice as much caffeine as coffee beans, boosting metabolism and enhancing body and mind. And whilst I’m not keen to give up my daily coffee, I did really enjoy a cup of this in the morning. It’s easy on the stomach and has a subtle fruity taste, great for a warming boost first thing.

Digestive SuperSeed

As my colleague kindly pointed out at work, this one smells of hot Sambuca – yuck! But as I’ve often found, smells can be deceiving with tea, usually for the wrong reason (strong smell, weak ass taste) but I found quite the opposite with this one. It’s a great tea for sipping throughout the day at work when you want a little more than plain old water and the ingredient list is full of traditional herbal aids such as Fennel and Fenugreek seeds which are known to help aid digestion.

Now I have to admit, the name of this tea totally puts me off. It’s a great marketing ploy but completely misleading as far as I’m concerned. I’m hoping the name simply means that the tea is great for your gut, and from the ingredients list which contains psyllium husk, it seems like this is the case. As for the flavour, I do rather enjoy it, even though it contains Roobios which is usually my least favourite tea. 

Supportive Root Remedy 

I’m a hug fan of the rather divisive turmeric latte so it was no surprise that I actually enjoyed this one. The tea contains ingredients such as Tumeric & Ginger which are known for their anti-inflammatory properties. I find this is a great tea to have in the afternoon or early evening as it has a great warming taste. It’s one I’ll be brewing more when Winter rears it’s ugly head again! 

Relaxing Night time

I’m a massive fan of night time teas and already have a sturdy collection in my cupboards. So how did this one compare? I found that it held up against my favourite Twinings night time tea and has the same great soothing qualities. The calming camomile and spearmint are super relaxing and I love to pair them with a square of dark chocolate and a good book!

30 things at 30

It might come as a huge shock (stick tongue out emoji) but yes, earlier this year I turned the ripe old young age of 30. It took a while to come to terms with it but after multiple internal battles, a few tears over my (partly) wasted youth and finding too many grey hairs to count (seriously, it’s as if I turned 30 and my hairs just turned white) I am finally at peace with my new age.

Now here’s where I should say that you shouldn’t have regrets and age is just a number but, lets keep it real, I feel like I missed the boat with a few things. I regret not travelling more, not working harder at my acting career and having spent far too many hours of my 20’s worrying about my imperfect body and what other people thought about me. Don’t get me wrong, I realise that all is not lost and I can still achieve many of these things (I’m all for going travelling in my 30’s, 40’s or even 50’s) but lets face it, some things are much easier in your 20’s before the responsibilities of real ‘adult’ life set in – career, marriage, home, pets, children.

But it’s not all doom and gloom, it’s in thinking about the things I missed out on in my 20’s that I thought about all of the things I’ve achieved. And in thinking of all the things I have achieved, I thought about all of the things I’ve learnt over the years and how these things have helped to shape me into the person I am today – a person who I hope is loving, caring, fun and talented.

So, without further adieu, I give you my top 30 things I’ve learnt in 30 years…

  1. Comparison is the thief of joy
  2. I’ll never have a perfect body (and I’m okay with that)
  3. Make sure you laugh everyday
  4. Anxiety is a bitch!
  5. Work hard, play even harder
  6. Find something you love and do it
  7. Find a workout you enjoy and keep doing it
  8. Be kind
  9. Love all animals (and don’t eat them!)
  10. Complimenting others is both uplifting for you and them
  11. Make sure you see the good in others
  12. Carbs are not the enemy
  13. Don’t drink too much Prosecco (it sends me loopy)
  14. Don’t take people for granted – especially those closest to you
  15. Try not to worry about things that haven’t happened yet
  16. Sleep is your best friend
  17. Find a good skincare regime (and stick to it)
  18. Take you make up off every night
  19. A wasted day enjoyed is not a day wasted
  20. Tell your partner you love them everyday
  21. And don’t go to sleep angry
  22. There’s nothing a face mask, a glass of red, a lush bath bomb can’t fix (well, most things)
  23. You don’t have to drink to have fun
  24. Join in the conversation (and make your voice heard)
  25. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes
  26. Smile more (it makes you feel happier and makes you more approachable)
  27. Drink more water (I swear I say this every blog post)
  28. Appreciate your surroundings (the world is a beautiful place)
  29. Unsubscribe (to junk emails and to social accounts that don’t bring you joy!)
  30. Slow down

Now here’s to another 30 years of learning.

Skincare has always been important to me especially since I became all about the sweatlife, and even more so since turning 30 earlier this year.  

If you’re a bit of a gym bunny too (which, if you’re reading this, I’m pretty sure you are) then it’s important that you pay special attention to your skin as it can get particularly clogged up.

Personally, I’ve always struggled with my skin. It’s combination with an oily t-zone and dehydrated cheeks, whilst still finding the time to be dry in patches. I’m also massively prone to breakouts, even at the ripe old age of 30!

I have a love hate relationship with running. I love running at my leisure, with no set pace and length in mind, but I hate despise running during a Crossfit WOD or race. I love running when the sun is shining (and even in the summer rain) but I hate running in the cold and the dark. I love running outside but I hate running on the treadmill. 

At the start of 2017, I set the goal to mix up my workouts a bit more and try something new every month. Now running isn’t new to me but it is something I don’t work on enough, so when John Lewis got in touch to send me some trainers for their website I jumped at the chance.

What better motivation right?

I’m in no way a beginner runner and can easily run 5K, but I’m not a seasoned runner either – so I thought I would bring you my top running tips for beginners and things that have helped me in the past.

Set yourself a goal

Goal setting is important in everything we do, especially fitness. 

Reaching larger goals can seem pretty daunting. A marathon may feel impossible right now but after 6months of setting and achieving smaller goals it will seem a lot more doable. You may start with the goal to just getting your trainers on and getting outside – even if it’s just a run around the block, it’s much less overwhelming and much more achievable that a marathon, right?

You may want to tackle a 5k next, then a 10k etc. etc. before eventually you’ll be at that starting line looking your marathon goals square in the face!

Run with friends

Everything is better with a friend – even running. For a start you’re less likely to cancel on a friend than you are on yourself, you’ll be able to motivate each other through those tough runs and you’ll have much more fun. Plus, there’s nothing like a bit of friendly rivalry!

Or better still join a club. You’ll get all the benefits of running with a friend and more. There’ll be more conversation to help pass the time on longer runs; they’ll be different pacesetters with both faster, and even slower, members of the club and it’s much safer on the streets especially in the dark winter months.

Treat yourself to some new gear

I was kindly sent some new trainers from John Lewis and it reminded me of the importance of keeping your gear fresh, not only for the feel good factor but to ensure your feet are being well looked after too. 

Whether you’re pounding the payments or tearing up the treadmill, you’ll be putting your feet under a lot of pressure – so investing in a good pair of shoes is a must (Be prepared to spend a little bit more on a good pair of trainers, around £80-100).

Just as a running shoe should be these Nike trainers are super comfortable, light and flexible on the feet, great for absorbing the shock of your foot striking the pavement. John Lewis even offer a gait analysis service in their Peter Jones, High Wycombe, Cheadle and Birmingham shops

Make running a habit 

Studies show it takes 66 days to form a habit, so get our your diary and mark the days you’ll go running over the next 10 weeks and DON’T GIVE UP. If you’re a morning runner prep your kit the night before and set a recurring alarm, and if you’re an evening runner, put your kit by the front door so it’s the first thing you see (and do) after work. 

Get a plan and stick to it

It’s not as simple as sticking on a pair of trainings and heading out the door. If you’ve been pretty inactive until now, it’s worth finding a good plan. Not only will it help keep you accountable, it’s also paramount in building up your activity levels. You’ll want to be mixing up longer and shorter runs, sprints and jogs and everything in between.

There are some great plans out there such as the Couch to 5K. You can also find a plan on most running websites (this Asics one is great) or from your local run club.

Switch it up

Pounding the pavements every night can get boring and is definitely the number one motivation killer for me. So switch it up and find somewhere new to run, it may be local park or further afield out in the country side. I love finding a run with an obstacle course in the middle for a bit of mid-run fun, or a nice country pub at the end for the ultimate weekend motivation.

Rest 

Remember – rest is just as important as training.

I know you want to hit that 5k as soon as possible but trust me, you’ll get there quicker if you rest. As with all types of training, when you run you create tiny tears in your muscle tissue; your body will then try to repair these tears which will help to build muscle. So if you don’t get adequate rest then the body won’t get time to repair itself properly.

Now I’m not big on reviewing products for my blog, especially dedicating a whole post to them, but sometimes I just have to make an exception. 

I was first introduced to Just Bee at a LuluLemon event in Manchester and got to try out one of the flavours post workout. I was instantly intrigued by the brand firstly on the packaging, secondly on the simplistic, natural product inside the packaging and thirdly on the people behind the product.

Who are Just Bee?

Just Bee grew out of a family’s love for Bee’s and honey. With a beekeeper in the family for at least the last two generations it was no wonder that Just Bee was born. And not only do Just Bee sell their bee-utiful drinks, they also have a passion for saving the bees too.

It’s funny, I’ve always been pretty calm when around bee’s (despite being scared of just about everything else!). I remember sitting in a classroom at primary school during snack time when a bee flew into the room, whilst everyone ran round like nutters I sat still, and when the bee landed on my hand I continued to sit still and eventually it flew away. Remember, bees are our friends and only sting when they feel threatened. So if one lands on your arm don’t run around waving them in the air, just stay calm and still and eventually the bee will leave you alone.

Now to the drinks

A Just Bee Drinks review wouldn’t be a review now without a cheeky taste test, so Just Bee kindly sent me one of each flavour to try! At first glance I was drawn to the Apple & Ginger flavour and it didn’t disappoint. I absolutely love ginger and although it didn’t knock my socks off (I like my ginger strong) it was super refreshing and I downed the carton in 10 seconds flat (note to Just Bee, make big bottles please so I can drink even more!).

Just Bee drinks are best served chilled and when poured over ice make the perfect alcohol free alternative when all your friends around you are getting drunk… great for anyone giving up alcohol for lent, and beyond!

After trying all three my favourite has to be the Lemon and Green tea, closely followed by the Blueberry.

Again the flavours aren’t very strong but are still tasty and if you struggle to drink enough water in your day then consider trying Just Bee as an alternative. At less than 50 calories per carton, more than 90% spring water and just a touch of honey and fruit juice they’re much more diet friendly than your shop bought cordial!
