Healthy Spiced Apple Crumble

It’s that time of year when we are craving our favourite comfort foods – and for me the biggest comfort of them all is warm apple crumble. If I’m feeling snacky but want to stay healthy, I’ll often pop a chopped apple, some cinnamon and a tsp of water into the microwave, however, if I’m feeling a little more indulgent I might make the below recipe (I’m even eating it for breakfast as we speak – naughty!!).

Apples are a quintessentially British fruit which are naturally fat & sodium free, contain only naturally occurring sugars, are a high source of fibre, and contain a decent amount of Vitamin C (perfect for keeping those pesky colds at bay!). They are also high in antioxidants (another winner) and are known as a top anti-inflammatory food which have even been shown to ease pain and inflammation through their polyphenol content.

And what’s more – my husband has even asked me to make this next time we host a dinner party… SUCCESS!

So what more of an excuse do you need to make my Spiced Apple Crumble…

Serves 2-4 people (depending on how greedy you are)

For the crumble:

  • 1 cup old fashioned oats (GF)
  • 1/2 cup almonds
  • 2 tbsp Coconut sugar
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • pinch Himalayan rock salt

For the apple:

  • 3 cups chopped apple
  • 2-3 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • pinch nutmeg
  • dash of ground ginger
  1. Pre-heat oven to 180°
  2. Add coconut oil & almonds to a blender and blend thoroughly
  3. Add coconut sugar and oats and mix with your fingertips until it resembles a crumble 
  4. Heat apples, maple & spices in a pan for 5mins
  5. Add apples into oven proof dish 
  6. Top with crumble
  7. Bake for 20mins
  8. Enjoy!

You could even top with a drizzle of honey or a sprinkle of coconut sugar before baking.
